What Makes an Ending Haunt

Do

Let the last image or line carry more weight than it announces. The haunting ending almost never signals itself. It arrives quietly and the reader doesn’t realize until later that it was the thing that got them.

Avoid

Explaining what the ending means. A final paragraph that reflects on the significance of what just happened discharges the tension the ending was supposed to hold. Trust the reader to feel it. The explanation collapses the haunting into a summary.

The Last Image

Do

Let the final image be smaller than the reader expects. The haunting ending almost never closes on the largest moment. It closes on something quiet that carries the weight of everything that came before it.

Avoid

Final images that are too symbolic. A symbol calls attention to its own meaning and the reader processes it consciously rather than feeling it in the body. The final image should arrive before the brain catches up to what it means.

From My Work

What to Leave Unresolved

Do

Give the reader something to hold instead of the resolution they wanted. Not nothing—something. A moment, an image, a gesture that acknowledges the unresolved thing without answering it. The reader needs somewhere to put the feeling, even if the feeling doesn’t resolve.

Avoid

Leaving things open because you didn’t know how to close them. Readers feel the difference between an unresolved ending that was chosen and one that was defaulted to. The chosen one has weight. The defaulted one feels empty.

The Ending That Earns Its Incompleteness

Do

Trust the reader who has been inside the story. They’ve earned the haunting ending. They know what it cost and why the resolution would have cost more.

Avoid

Treating the unresolved ending as a shortcut. It’s not easier to leave things open than to close them. Done correctly, it’s harder—because the opening has to be precisely the right shape, precisely the right size, and it has to arrive at precisely the right moment for the reader to feel it as true rather than empty.
