What Bad Pages Actually Are

Do

Treat bad pages as data. A scene that doesn’t work is telling you something about what the scene needs. A character who won’t do what you need them to do is telling you something about who they are. The bad page is full of information. The blank page has none.

Avoid

Deleting bad pages before you’ve finished the draft. The bad page you deleted at the end of Tuesday might be exactly what you needed on Thursday when you couldn’t figure out why the next scene wasn’t working. Keep everything until the draft is done.

The Permission Problem

Do

Separate the drafting session from the judgment session. Write first. Assess later. The writer who reads yesterday’s pages before writing today’s is inviting yesterday’s problems into today’s work. Write forward. Read backward only when the draft is done.

Avoid

Editing as you draft. The writer who writes a sentence and immediately revises it before writing the next one is not drafting. They’re revising a draft that doesn’t exist yet, which is why the page never gets finished. Write the sentence. Write the next one. Trust that revision will come.

Why Progress Is the Right Word

Do

Celebrate finishing bad scenes. The bad scene you finished is ahead of the good scene you haven’t written yet. Finish the bad one. The good version is somewhere inside it.

Avoid

Comparing your first draft to anyone else’s published work. Published work has been through revision, line editing, copy editing, and proofreading. Your first draft is being compared to its own future revised self, which is the only fair comparison.

The Character Who Won’t Cooperate

Do

Trust the refusal. The character who won’t cooperate is almost always right. Follow them and fix the plot. Don’t fix the character to fit the plot.

Avoid

Writing around the refusal by having another character do the thing or by summarizing the scene rather than writing it. The avoidance is a sign that the problem is real. Face it directly.
